It was about a year ago that a local photography store held a macro class which let you try out a number of lens from Tamron. It was a cold February day and we were granted access to the city’s green house to take pictures and play with a variety of lenses.
I already knew which one I wanted so I couldn’t wait to try it out. I had been wanting both a fast lens and a macro lens so the Tamron 60mm 2.0 was the first one I tried. There was a brief overview of macro photography earlier in the week to let you focus on just shooting that Saturday morning.
I ended up getting the 60mm at a later time and have enjoyed it. In fact it is the lens that is usually on my camera. I also use it a quick portrait lens when indoors taking pictures of the grandkids due to the 2.0 capabilities. But this is only valid if they aren’t moving too quick and I get a chance to focus as the auto-focus can search some times and is not as fast as my regular Nikon lenses.
With me becoming more and more interested in macro photography, especially splash photos, I am thinking of selling the 60mm and getting either the 90mm or 180mm. While these lenses aren’t as fast as the 60mm I’ve realized that I don’t need that low of an fstop for macro photography. The DoF I get with the 60mm can be tiny especially when I am just a few inches from the subject. (The closer your subject the shallower your DoF.) Plus I want to get a bit of distance so I don’t have to worry as much about getting the lens covered in whatever I am dropping/splashing.
